“Why hasn’t anyone told me this before?”
Patients routinely ask me this. On the one hand, I’m grateful it means I’ve provided them meaningful information. On the other hand, it’s terrible. It means, every visit within the healthcare system up until now has failed to empower them with the basic education to improve their health.
I am passionate about health and wellness. I believe that the human body was designed to achieve health if given the right tools. The tools are not complicated, but they involve looking at your entire lifestyle, not a single symptom.
Conventional medicine failed me too…
Twelve years ago I experienced a radical health transformation. I was 30 pounds overweight–having gained steadily after each of my pregnancies. I struggled to feel comfortable in my own body. Maybe you can relate.
I spent years trying everything conventional medicine taught me to do–low fat, low carb, low calorie, and more exercise. I was motivated to change, but nothing seemed to work. I felt trapped in a stranger’s body, wondering how it happened. I felt hopeless. I no longer felt beautiful. This was not the vision I had for my life or for the life of my family. I started on a journey to find a new way forward.
Functional medicine changed everything
What I discovered was functional medicine. Functional medicine focuses on the root cause of illness. It’s a systems approach–recognizing that body parts don’t operate in isolation. I wanted to know why my body would not cooperate with my efforts.
The more I dove into functional medicine, the more I realized the answer would involve a holistic lifestyle change. I studied:
- Gut health
- Immune function
- Adrenal fatigue
I radically changed my diet. I became excited about exercise. I began to reduce stress by improving my sleep habits and seeking connection in relationships. I not only lost the 30 pounds, but I found emotional freedom from the weight struggle.
I have spent the past twelve years helping others discover the same freedom and hope.
